"Music can change the world because music can change people. That's what makes my job so special! I teach K-5 general music at a Title I school in North Carolina. We are a creative arts and science magnet school which means the arts are core curriculum areas and students are always receiving instruction based on Howard Gardner's Multiple Intelligence Theory.

We have a small class of special learners with severe behavior disorders at our school who absolutely love music and rhythm. These students need to be actively engaged and physically involved in their learning but they also need a lot of extra help and practice with control. In the music room we are in need of alternative percussion instruments that will allow these students to explore music and learn to explore learning in an active way but that doesn't involve disrupting all of the classrooms around us!

Boomwhackers and Practice Pads are quiet alternatives to the louder (and more breakable) percussion instruments we have in our music classroom. Using the boomwhackers will allow these students the opportunity to stand up and move when performing music and will help them learn to read and perform not only rhythms but melodies as well. Practice Pads let the students practice drumming skills (their absolute favorite) in a quiet way that doesn't interrupt the learning of other students. Both of these instruments also provide a SAFE way for these students to learn music and practice control.

Your help will ensure that these special learners will achieve a high level of success in the music room. And since all of our learning in music is integrated with topics in math, reading, science, social studies, and the other arts, students will be learning important key concepts and life skills too. We can change the world together... one music student at a time!

My students need quiet and active percussion instrument alternatives and activities, such boomwhacker sets, practice drum pads, and activity guides. The cost of this proposal is $289, which includes shipping for any materials requested and fulfillment ?."

Ms. W. sent this note after the project was fully funded:

Dear Jason, Aida, Stacy, Thomas and Jolee and Dad & Susan,
I am so very thankful for your generous donations to our projects. It is so exciting to know that my students will soon be having a "booming good time," growing as musicians, and learning valuable social and life skills because of your support. I am honored that you share my vision for providing every student with memorable and lasting impressions in the arts!
The instruments and supplies that you have funded will enable students explore rhythm and melody in a hands-on way that will really make music come alive. All of our students will benefit from this exciting addition to our music classroom, especially our students with special learning needs and physical disabilities. The boomwhackers will help students develop physical motor and coordination skills as well as important social skills as they are reading, composing, and performing music.
I can't wait to introduce this exciting new way of learning to my students. Thank you so much!!

With gratitude,
Ms. W.
