The advantage of teaching at a small school is that every freshmen passes through my Physical Science class. The students all have a common science background and experience. Being in a small rural school however creates obstacles that schools with larger numbers of students and easier access to resources don't face. Using the digital cameras requested here will help to at least bridge the gap in technology that is created by the rural school location.

The Physical Science course that I teach could not be described as a passive experience for the students. The concepts are derived from the hands-on experiences. Often I refer back to a lab situation or demonstration when trying to reinforce a concept. Having a pictorial record of the activities done in class would help the students to recall the concepts learned from a particular activity

I would like students to be able to freely document their lab experiences with digital cameras. The digital cameras would be available for students to use in the classroom any time we do an activity. Throughout the year I would encourage students to take pictures of all activities. I would then upload the pictures to the computer and possibly also the school website so students (and parents) would have access. This photo taking would not just be for show. At the end of the year I would have a culminating project. Each student (or group of students) would be required to create a PowerPoint presentation using the photos. In the presentation students would not only include the photos, but also a description of what the activity was and what they learned. The final presentation would be kind of like a yearbook for Physical Science. This would act as a review of the concepts learned throughout the year. I would like to have the presentations still available to the students the next spring so they could use them to review for the statewide science test that covers materials from the 9th and 10th grades.

Students have so many photographic memories of high school social events. This will help my students to preserve their academic experience in pictures. By having multiple cameras available many groups can take pictures of the same activity from different points of view. The availability of the digital camera and images will allow my students to integrate a new kind of technology into science. They will also be able to employ presentation skills learned in other classes. I hope that having a visual way to review the year and to review for future tests on the material will help the students retain the concepts for a longer period of time.
