Funny story, no really this one still makes me laugh (maniacally.) Last year Donor's Choose helped some wonderful people, just like you, donate a few video cameras to our class so we could write, record, edit, and screen our own short films about the medieval world. In spite of a few technical set backs (a few students brought their own laptops in as the school computers are...well...continue reading) we were wildly successful. The highlight at the end of the year Medieval World Fair was, without a doubt, having our films projected on the wall of the gym. Having the technology in hand and the opportunity to start the year with films instead of ending up there, I asked the students (if they had the means) to purchase flash drives to hold their film files. This seemed like a reasonable fix, since last year the computers kept crashing and nearly completed projects disappeared into the digital wind. The second week of school (and this is the funny part in case you've been wondering) we went into the computer lab (most of the computers in this lab are over ten years old) and the students searched for the USB ports on the backside of the computers. They plugged their drives in and...the computers WERE NOT strong enough to handle the extra memory and crashed, and crashed, and crashed, and crashed, and crashed (insert maniacal laughter here.) So we've got some cameras. And we've got some antique computers. Last year we made it work: with a lot of lost files, a lot of lost work, and a lot of frustration. This year I'd like it to be different. This year instead of scrounging to find a computer or two that students can sometimes depend on to work I'd like to have a few solid and dependable desktops in the classroom, ready and waiting. You can help by providing us with a great computer that is not too expensive, powerful enough to edit films on, and not manufactured during the Reagan Administration. Your generous donation will enable us to more easily use modern media and narrative to express our learning and ourselves. Sounds good to me, how about you?
