Breathing Life Into Drama: Trying On Literature

My students need copies of Shakespeare adaptations to compare and contrast different interpretations, filmed interviews of actors discussing the parts they're playing, and fabric to sew costumes from so they can literally try on the part.

I am the sole high school language arts/journalism teacher in a tiny Yup'ik village in the Alaskan bush. Our population faces a lot of challenges financially, and many of our students struggle with reading and comprehension. I have approximately 50 students, although some are taking multiple sections. Because of our remote location, most of my students have never been to a play. Actually, some of them have never even been to Anchorage! Almost all of their drama experience comes from popular movies and television. That doesn’t quite set them up for a dramatic interpretation – much less Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing and Hamlet! I would love to bring a small glimmer of the theatre experience to my students, and help them understand what a vehicle for discovery and expression it can be. My dream is to help them discover the craft of acting through the actor interviews in Playing Shakespeare and dramatic reading. I would like to use multiple movie adaptations of our plays to compare and contrast the acting and directing choices that were made and help students enter into a discussion about what choices they think should have been made. Getting them in the mind-space to actually read the parts dramatically is a challenge too, so I would love an opportunity to get them in costume so they can really try-on the part. I’ve noticed how much more engaged I can get them with the few costume accessories, and I’ve got a feeling they will really turn on that delightful goofiness with the full thing! Seamstresses (as in me and another teacher) are already standing by with our machines threaded to turn fabric into simple costumes, cloaks and hats that can be used for years in different plays, productions and class readings. The learning and expressive opportunities these will present boggle my mind with joy. Your support will ensure that my students have an opportunity to really connect with drama, and understand how it can be used to express ideas, points of view and universal truths. You will help them engage in style as they literally try on a character, walk into another world and connect with someone else’s way of looking at the world or just a given situation.
