Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach 4th grade in California. I have 25 students in my class, and most students struggle to meet grade level standards in reading and math. Over half of our school population receives free or reduced lunch and approximately one third are second language learners.

One challenge in a 4th grade class is to monitor students as they complete their work. Students need to practice correctly and teachers need to be able to quickly assess student understanding. Oftentimes tests are given at the end of a unit of study and by the time the results are in the class has already moved on to the next topic. In order for me to be an effective teacher, my students need to be assessed each and every day.

Student dry erase boards can be used daily in order to teach new concepts and to assess learning. I can teach a lesson to my class and students will be able to practice the concept at their desks with an individual dry erase board and pen. Students will hold up their boards so that I can quickly see if their answers are correct and if not, where they went wrong. I will circle throughout the class helping those that need it on the spot before moving on. The use of boards is immediate and there is no chance of students practicing the work incorrectly.

Your help will ensure that these students are receiving the best education possible. The use of student dry erase boards is a powerful tool that can be used in all areas of the curriculum and positive results will be evident immediately. Thank you for supporting our school and our students.
