I teach Language Arts to 6th graders at my elementary school in Southern California. Our school is well-known for its focus on Character Education, and has been awarded the honor of a National School of Character, among many other distinctions.

Finding quality literature that students enjoy reading is often a challenge. Recently my students read a short story about Helen Keller, and they are BEGGING to learn more about her. As a former Special Education teacher, I will always have a special place in my heart for people with disabilities. It is very important to me, as a general education teacher, that my students are aware of this population, and accepting of all people, regardless of their situations. Many typically developing children do not have the opportunity to meet or work with people with disabilities. It is my goal to introduce them to such people, whether in person or through literature, so that they come to know and understand that we are all equal and deserving of respect.

After reading the short story about Helen Keller, my students are very interested in her life and would like to learn more. I am requesting 35 copies of the Biography of Helen Keller to read with my students. While these books would serve 35 students at a time, during the course of the school year 100 students would benefit from it.

Your generous donation will allow the students to read a novel that they have shown interest in. They will learn about people with disabilities and hopefully relate with certain aspects of the story.
