Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach first grade to an eager bunch of diverse learners. I am always on the lookout for materials that are child-friendly and can be used by the kids but also in whole class instruction.

With 26 kids all reading at different levels I need some materials that naturally build on all kids abilities. I need materials that are magnetic so that all kids can see them that support their learning of sound chunks.

When learning to read, children need to look for familiar chunks. They need to see "at" as a whole sound rather than 2 sounds. They need to see "ill" and instantly know that it says ill rather than having to sound it out. Magnetic words and sounds will help my children practice these sounds daily. They will be able to access them, see them, pull them off the wall and touch them as they say each sound. The Dr. Seuss books will allow us to apply these word building skills to words both real and imaginary. They will be able to use the sound chunks to read the words in the books.

These materials will help my students master chunking. With this skill their reading abilities will grow by leaps and bounds. It is vital that they learn this skill! As readers, when you or I come to a word that we don't know... we look for groups of letters that form familiar sound chunks to us. We then put these sounds together to form a word. That it the exact skill I need to teach these 6 year olds. With your help you'll be arming them with reading skills that are effective and long lasting!
