Picture one of the children in my Pre-K class. He’s dressed in pants that are two sizes too small, no socks, and shoes three sizes too big. Dirt cakes his ears and the marker line he drew on himself a week ago is still on his arm. He’s painfully introverted and won’t make eye contact with anyone even when asked about his lunch choice for the day. And then he smiles when he writes his first letter. The 1000 watt grin overpowers his shyness.

Or let’s look at the little girl with the winning personality. She charms everyone she sees with her outgoing character. You almost don’t notice how her physical disability has affected her ability to hold a pencil. Lastly, let’s look at the 4 year old boy with behavior issues. He lacks the patience and discipline to practice his letters over and over.

Handwriting Without Tears is a nationally recognized writing education program that has a proven record of teaching a child to recognize letters and write! County and state budget cuts have forced the elimination of “extra” programs. For kids who are high achievers, HWT will help them learn faster. But the real benefit is for those kids who need more. It will be used year after year to facilitate a love of writing, learning and life.

Each one of the children in the class has the potential to be a Marie Curie, a Dr. Seuss, or the President of The United States. But it all starts with writing. If a child does not fall in love with reading and writing, his life has just become harder. Coupled with the high poverty in my school and unstable home life, the little girl who can’t write her name is almost condemned to a single mother’s life. Your generous donation might unlock a new J. P. Salinger or Maya Angelou. Instill a love of the written word and you give a future to a child who might have ended up in a prison—not just a prison for criminals, but a prison of despair.
