Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am an education specialist and I teach 2nd and 3rd grade special needs children, non-severe with mild to moderate disabilities. My students come from a high-need area where 100% receive free lunch and breakfast. Most of my students overcome obstacles everyday just to come to school. Some of their parents do not help them get ready, some have to wake up very early to catch the bus to be at school on time. I am so proud of them everyday I see them walk through the front gate.

I changed schools this year and went to a school that did not have the materials my students need and deserve. One week before school started I walked into my new assignment and found a completely empty room. I have managed to acquire some math manipulatives but we still have a need to get any money manipulatives. Our district does not have a budget and is unable to support my class.

My students learn best with visual supports. The money manipulatives will allow students to have a visual and tangible representation of the money. The magnetic money allows us to use the money on the white board and manipulate the dollars and coins to show different configurations with the denominations. My students also need many opportunities to have strategies reinforced before they become internalized. The math games will allow my second and third graders to reinforce the math concepts they are expected to master. These games are perfect for both grade levels in my room. The skills that the games reinforce are the skills and strategies in the state standards. My students will be able to be engaged in the activities, touch the manipulatives and master new skills. Learning can't happen for my students if it is not engaging and fun. The manipulatives and games will be engaging and fun for my students.

Your help will allow me to make learning fun for my students. The students in my class have so many disadvantages in their lives the materials in their classroom should not be one of them. These materials will help my students using different modalities such as tactile, visual, kinesthetic and auditory. Having these materials will mean a world of difference for my students. Learning is difficult for them and they know it. They need all the supports we can provide for them.
