In this age of exploding technology, teachers are constantly searching for new ways to engage learners.

Children who are surrounded by DVDs, television, and video games are usually the ones least likely to want to pick up a book. However, research shows how important it is to surround young children with many and varied language and literacy experiences.

What is the solution? BookFlix! An online literacy program targeted for children Pre-K through 3rd grade, BookFlix uses interactive fictional classic storybook videos and pairs them with non-fiction eBooks. These engaging storybooks pique students’ interest in a topic, while non-fiction eBooks help students connect the stories to real world facts and build a curiosity and understanding of the world around them. Students also learn to compare and contrast fact and fiction. Also, research has found that reading aloud to children is correlated to later success with independent reading. With the “Read Along” feature activated, children can follow along as each word is narrated in the video and read along in the non-fiction eBook. A young learner beginning to read can listen to a story read aloud regardless of whether a parent, teacher, or librarian is available to read to them. BookFlix also provides students with home access so they can revisit the fiction videos and non-fiction eBooks from any Internet connection.

Your help will ensure that students in every classroom at our school are provided school-wide access to BookFlix. Students with Internet access would also be able to log on to the site remotely at home.
