My students need 10 resources, including glue, pencils, various colors of construction paper, a class set of colored pencils and markers, and jewelry and art boxes.

I teach Functional Math and Job Skills Math to Special Education students in Mississippi. I am in an area that was devastated by Hurricane Katrina and is now getting back on its feet.

Unfortunately, the school district has been hit hard by cutbacks. Art in math is on the back burner but students in all my classes enjoy being creative and are very talented, too.

It would be wonderful if we could get construction paper, colored pencils, and markers to make different projects such as Christmas ornaments. My students would also enjoy decorating art or jewelry boxes using fraction skills on the design. The students will make designs by sectioning off the project using fraction skills to demonstrate their understanding of fractions, decimals, and percentages. They may also design the projects by using various shapes: circles, triangles, pyramids, rectangles, squares, octagons, hexagons, etc.

Students get such a thrill when they can design something themselves. They feel a sense of accomplishment. Not only do they get exposed to art, but experience math by designing projects.
