May I Read with You?

My students need a CD and cassette player/recorder, 2 CD players (one for each grade), 2 junction boxes (one for each grade), and a set of 8 headphones.

Would someone read to my students? I have a 4-5 combination class with students who are mostly English Language learners and receive free lunch.

With two grades in a classroom, my time spend with each grade to read aloud their selections in the reading program is limited. My classroom does not have a listening center where my students, especially the English Language Learners can practice their fluency and decoding skills.

It would be frustrating if the students have to read by themselves and unable to decode new and long words. They would love to have a listening center with a CD player and headphones. The reader from the CD can demonstrate how to fluently read with expression and pronounce new vocabulary. Students will be able to quietly read-along and adjust the volume to fit their need. With audio aids, they will find reading interesting and enjoyable. A CD and cassette player/recorder allows me to do the recording, and students can bring home the cassettes for practice.

By setting up a listening center in the classroom, you will make it possible for the English Learners to improve their comprehension and fluency in reading.
