Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach a group of 20 first grade students in a school that has changed significantly. Our mobility rate and poverty rate have doubled in the last 5 years. My first graders are coming to school lacking basic skills that they used to have in the past. Our school is committed to providing all of our students the skills they need for success.

My students are exposed to a 30 minute lesson to strengthen their phonics skills every day. This lesson takes place on the floor of the classroom with instruction on the white board in front of them. The white board is at adult height so it is hard for the students to use it as a teaching tool. I then take my most struggling students and give them a second dose of oral language lessons in groups of 5 students at a time. My students need a small group learning area that is at their height that has an easel and storage bins for books. This area would create a warm and inviting "Gathering Place" where students will be more willing to take risks in reading and language activities.

Our classroom could really use an easel with a white board attached for our "Gathering Place" lessons. This easel would have a magnetic white board and the ability to hang large chart paper for writing lessons. It would also have book bins for easy access for the students to self select books for independent reading. Imagine creating a fun and inviting area where the kids have easy view and use of materials. The white board is within their reach and big books could sit on the tray for them to read without assistance! Imagine this "Gathering Place" as a place where children are free to sit together and discuss books and language! A place you want to spend time in together!

With your help you can ensure the "Gathering Place" will be an area in the room that kids have access to at their level! Imagine the hum of the classroom as children are seated together in a warm and friendly spot. Watch them as they can read from a big book that will stay open for them on the easel. Enjoy the excitement as children self select books from the bins underneath! Let's work together to hear "Would you meet me at the Gathering Place" so we can read together?" or "Help me read this big book! I will be the teacher and you can be the student!" Shouldn't everyone have the comfort of a "Gathering Place?" You can make it a reality!
