Listening Center For My ESL/ELL 1st Grade Classroom

My students need a listening center with a set of read-along books with accompanying compact discs.

I teach a multicultural, ESL/ELL first grade class. There are 27 six-year old students learning how to read and write. I want to provide them with a fun, meaningful learning experience. These students come from a high poverty community, many of whom don't know where the next meal is coming from. I want them to view school as a safe, comfortable and fun place where they can have many different learning experiences.

Many of my students do not speak English at home. Their parents do not speak English and can not help them with learning letter sounds and blending them together to make words. They also do not have the resources to practice reading at home. Since many of my students do not hear the English language on a regular basis, especially over the weekend and school breaks, I want them to have as much time in school soaking up the English language and learning all the words they can. I want them to enjoy reading and be excited about books.

I believe a listening center will be very beneficial to my ESL/ELL students who not only need to see the word but hear it read aloud before they attempt to read the words on their own. With a listening center and read-along set of wonderful books, I think this will give them an edge in their learning. It will give them a different outlet to learn to read. Instead of just looking at pictures, the students will hear and know what is actually written.

You will make it possible for these students to learn the English language in a fun and engaging way by providing them with a listening center and set of read-along books. Their reading levels will go up and they will want to read when they have free time knowing that it will be a positive experience. Thank you so much for making this opportunity available to all students.
