I teach mathematics at a school that educates at-risk students as part of a residential treatment program. Our school is part of a title 1 school district and our students are all listed as free and reduced lunch. They have varied backgrounds but are all "at-risk" and need extra attention and training to be successful in post-secondary education.
I operate my classroom using a variety of education methods. The students receive instruction as a class then work on their own. Often they will present their work to the rest of the class by reproducing it on the board. The students need a method of presenting the work they have completed on their papers without having to recreate everything they have done on the board. A document camera will allow them to display work they have already completed without the pressure of having to complete it again in front of the class. This will provide them better opportunities to "show off" their work and allow more time for them to receive further instruction.
Students have available to them an LCD projector, but only can produce presentations using computer programs. Adding a document camera will allow my students greater freedom in the types of materials they may share with the class. My students need a document camera that we may combine with the projector to make a presentation station. Using a presentation station will give the feel of technology that is available at many colleges. The comfort they will gain from using the equipment will give them greater comfort to those who pursue further education beyond high school.
Your help will give my students the confidence to share their work with others. This will prepare them for future college settings and work settings, where presenting to groups will be required.
