Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Last year, my 7th and 8th grade reading students received a modest donation of some high-interest teen books to supplement my classroom library. Our school is a K-8 school in urban Arizona, in a mostly Hispanic neighborhood. Our school library has very little for them, as it is focused on the K-6 students. This year, some of the students who benefited last year are asking for more! Here's what they have to say: "Because of your donations, the students at our school have opened up their minds to a wider variety of genres. At one point some of the students wouldn’t even pick up a book! The books we received last year were all amazing. As soon as we received them, we already had our top five picks! There were so many genres and at least one book for all interests. Sometimes, certain books would have a waiting list because they were so popular. It’s so great to see people donating their own money to help schools get books. We really do appreciate it. Some of our favorite genres include romance, thrillers, and horrors. Reading about romances makes a girl’s day. The thrillers however, appeal to everyone. The books are so good we can’t put them down! The horror is mainly for the boys. We all love books and have different preferences when it comes to genres. Authors like Sarah Dessen write fiction but they make it seem so real! This Lullaby was the first book we received that she wrote. It was so realistic that it was hard to believe it was fictional. Another great series, of course, is The Twilight Saga. We received Twilight and New Moon but some students can’t read to read Eclipse! The books are just so amazingly written and Edward makes our hearts go nuts! On behalf of all of us, thank you for all of your donations. If it wasn’t for your donations, we wouldn't have discovered those books and now we are dying to read more." This round of 35 books focuses on Hispanic writers and urban themes so that my students can read books that resonate with them. If you help put these books in front of them, they will read them! It is not lack of desire that prevents students in our neighborhood from being big-time readers, it is often lack of opportunity. Help change that forever! All books that you donate will stay in my classroom for years to come, inspiring young readers and leaders.
