I am a high school journalism teacher in a high-need community where college sometimes seems to be a pipe dream. We are working hard at documenting the current events and the history of our high school to both promote literacy; guarantee our students, faculty, staff and community remain chronicled for future generations; and prepare our students for the technological requirements of the college experience.

However, we suffered a huge setback this year. We were moved to a classroom without even one computer! To make matters more challenging, my students have very limited access to the Internet and the world of electronic media in a time when the printed newspaper is losing popularity to online news, blogs and other technology. We desperately need at least one laptop devoted to our newsroom to interact with other high school newspapers and blogs as well as world news and current events. Our students, faculty, staff and school accomplish small miracles each day that go undocumented, and we would like to be a part of the Internet community. We are able, on occasions, to use the school's projector, which will also give them opportunity to view the many and ever-growing world of online media.

Our newsroom needs a laptop computer that would give us opportunity to publish our own online newspaper as well as contribute text, pictures and even video to other websites and blogs to increase our school's exposure. Most importantly, technological availability for my students will increase the online research skills that are essential for today's college student. Most of my journalism students are seniors and worry that the socioeconomic barriers to technology might hinder their success in college.

Your help will empower my students' voices and make their talents more available to a broader audience. Most importantly, it will ensure they are not left behind due to a technological divide and will have the expertise to prepare them for college research.
