Ms. Shea's classroom raised $306

One Book, Two Books, Red Books, Blue Books!

My students need lower level chapter books and the buckets for storage, in our classroom library to help them transition into more meaty books later in the year.

I help shape the future. Through many hardships, tardiness, absenteeism, lice, hunger and poverty, I help make these children strong. Through tears, frustrations, anger and sadness I help make these children feel safe. I help shape the future. I am a friend, a nurse, a parent, a comedian, an actress, a listener, and a shoulder to cry on. I am a teacher. Like many schools we face challenges day to day. Due to the enormous poverty in our area, we face more than challenges. The conditions the children live in are "normal" to them. It is my job to create a new kind of "normal" from 8:35 to 2:30. A "normal" where my students feel loved, safe, fed, and happy is not easy to achieve.

My students often have little support at home. They also have few educational resources available outside the classroom. Reading is an essential part of life and it is a "normal" part of our day at school. I want them to begin to make it a "normal" part of their life at home. Everyday I ask the children to read in the classroom. Reading at home for 20 minutes is a homework assignment every evening to practice skills. When a child does not have books at home I typically send a book from my own library with them. Often these books become lost in their homes. Once they are lost my classroom library gets smaller and I have less books for them to take home. It is so important to continue making these books available to them at home regardless of the risk of losing them. Reading is an essential part of life and it is a "normal" part of our day at school.

Many of my students are below level readers and are unable to read longer chapter books. Lower level chapter books that are not as intimidating to students tend to be the most frequently read during class time and at home. I have some in my classroom but not nearly enough for all to share. These books would help ensure that I can send students home books to read every night. The only way to become a stronger reader is to read, read, read. That is what I always tell my students

Please help me support my students. This gift of books is small but will make a huge impact on them. Imagine one of these students snuggled up on their couch at home with the book you gave them. Their mind is busy learning. They will feel loved, trusted, and happy. All from reading a book. You will help make them stronger. You will help shape the future!
