My students need 25 flash drives and 25 individual subscriptions to Weekly Readers.

I teach 5th grade in an urban school with a diverse student body. A focus for our school this year is to integrate writing across the curriculum.

Because we use computers in both the computer lab and our classroom, we need flash drives for my students to transfer any writing that they are working on. Also, our lab computers often freeze up so students need to move between computers, therefore saving their work on a flash drive takes the frustration out of having no access to their work once this happens. The Weekly Readers give the students interesting, current examples of what Expository Writing looks like and may trigger some ideas about what they can do research on and then write about.

My students are all enthusiastic learners but are sometimes hampered by a lack of resources or having old technology. While the flash drives will not solve this problem, it will certainly lower the frustration since their work will be easily accessible, even if their computer goes down.

Putting more resources in the hands of my students will make our Writing Workshops run more smoothly. The flash drives will really aid them in moving their work between computers and the Weekly Reader subscriptions will give them a broader range of ideas from which to write their expository pieces.
