My classroom is made up of 22 fabulous four and five year olds who crave an amazing environment to learn. I teach Kindergarten 1, a Kindergarten curriculum for four year olds, in a Title I public school. Our school is located in a very urban poverty stricken community. Many of my students are English Language Learners with very limited English vocabularies.

Young learners need hands on experiences to learn how to read, write and understand mathematics. Our Morning Meeting sets the tone for the entire day. We use this time to teach literacy and mathematics skills in a fun way, review the daily schedule, greet one another and determine who is in school today. Our district has made major cutbacks and is unable to supply the materials we need. The parents of the children I teach have very limited resources and are unable to purchase materials for school.

I am requesting a variety of materials that range from magnetic numbers and letters for students to manipulate and explore to CDs to a photo library to promote awareness of phonics and sounds. The "Who's Here?" attendance chart will help us to keep track who is in school today. This helps them with name recognition, counting, and early literacy skills. The photo nameplates will display students' photographs and names. This will allow classmates to match letters to faces and will inspire them to write! We need "Counting Kids" to display numerals on the wall, which will allow children to match a number with a set of objects. The alphabet sounds photo library and alphabet pointers to help with phonemic awareness, the first step toward reading. The "Just for Fun!" CD will promote a love of music and wordplay. The "Hello from Around the World" picture cards will teach us new words that we can use to greet one another each day. This recognizes the diversity in my classroom as well as creating a print-rich morning meeting. The magnetic numbers and letters will be used to manipulate and use on the magnetic board to learn how to read and write. We also need a tabletop organizer to keep the easel materials organized. I would like all of these materials to engage and inspire my students by allowing them to interact with literacy and math in a meaningful way.
