MORE "My 8th grade Technology Education classes do a mass production project that gives each student immediate results in how teamwork produces a quality product over and over again.
Pickle juice from the school cafeteria is put into 2 oz. souffle cups, lidded, and frozen. These "Picklesicles" are used as earned rewards and treats in mine and other's classrooms. We use other juice also, such as grape, apple, or orange.
Each period becomes a company with a brainstormed name and logo and jobs are assigned based on past production run experience. These jobs include; cuppers, fillers, quality control, lidders, stackers, loader, packaging, transportation. At present, we fill the cups by hand using a one gallon plastic jar, some tubing, and a squeeze valve. The project has been so well received and the production numbers are increasing at a pace where I cannot afford the cups and lids.
I need 2 cases of 2 oz. souffle cups and 2 cases of lids. As the students perform their production run, they observe and report problem areas, consider solutions, and make corrections.
With your help, my students will understand the career concept that a company expects employees to make other contributions than just of their time.
