I am a part of a wonderful community of first grade learners. My students are a diverse group of students and often come from difficult home environments. Our urban school is our district's lowest socioeconomical elementary school. We are 100% free lunch (Title 1)and over 95% minority. It is often the first time many of my students have been exposed to the basic health, safety and nutrition concepts we introduce in class, which are required in our state science standards. We are really beginning at ground zero for many of my little ones.

What makes this especially challenging for me is that our health curriculum only consists of a text book and reproducible book, both which are very outdated. In fact, the text book is dated 1982, and the reproducible book is not even usable because it consists of those old purple ditto masters! The information they provide is outdated, and often jut plain wrong. Each year we are promised a new text adoption, yet budget cuts keep pushing them to the back burner.

My students really need up-to-date, hands on, visuals and materials to learn the health, safety and nutrition concepts they need to know in order to make healthy decisions now, and start on the road to life long healthy habits. The supplies I have requested consist of materials that will teach children health, nutrition and safety concepts, as well as teach them how to keep themselves safe and healthy, proactively, on a daily basis. The exciting and inviting materials will hold my students' interests, as well as cover our state health (science) standards.

Your support of this project will help my students learn, hands on, how good health choices will impact them now, as well as for the rest of their lives. For children living in a community where a disproportionally large amount of its people are facing major health issues, this is vital. This project will truly make a difference in their lives! Thank you!
