Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My classroom is a seventh-grade science and eight-grade environmental science class in an impoverished, urban, public school system in SE Michigan. Due to school closures, we became a pre K-8 school last year. We strive to include all grade levels in past, present, and future outdoor experiences.
Our goal is to create a "better environment for animals and humans in [our community]" according to my students. These students are growing up in an area of extreme blight, hostility, and destruction. We hope to create a small green oasis where beauty, nature, and education can thrive.
The supplies we are requesting will help build our outdoor classroom. We have begun the task by creating a 181 ft 2 raised garden bed, dug out pond, and put in a pond liner. However, these two activities have drained the funds that we have raised so far. We would like to add many new features this year such as, worm composting, general composting, bird houses/habitat, and various types of aquatic and terrestrial gardens. We need your help to make the area a viable, educationally stimulating, living green space.
The student have begun the work and they LOVE every minute of it. In fact, I can't seem to keep up with their energy and thirst for more. Now, we just need your help to get to the next stage in our journey.
