Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach a wonderful and talented group of 5th grade students in Arizona. We are a fine arts school and teach students in all subjects. The area I teach in is one that many call an at-risk area where families face many financial hardships, students witness violence, and struggle to make it to school some days. My school has a total of 95% free and reduced lunch with about an 85% English Language Learner (ELL) population.
With the high population of English Language Learners (ELLs) in my classroom, it is essential for students to have the opportunity for visual and verbal learning. In addition, they need numerous opportunities to construct and present information to further develop their writing, reading, and speaking skills by using available technology. This year funds are no longer available to purchase new equipment that my students use to learn new software and programs available to them. We are stopped short of the opportunities that are right at our fingertips.
By providing sets of microphone headsets, my students will be able to create numerous podcasts, screencasts, movies, and even chat with fellow learners across our city and state using Skype. These types of platforms will lend themselves to students being able to share their learning and enjoy what they are experiencing in our classroom. My students are often not able to venture outside of the neighborhood and see what is out there waiting for them, but to have the opportunity to virtually leave our classroom means only the sky is the limit. Normally, students just research and write reports and essays, only to present them inside the walls of a classroom using just the paper and art supplies available to them. But with the opportunity to record their voices and ideas online and with various programs, they can now share those things they learn and enjoy with anyone willing to listen! Their projects will be posted on our classroom blog and wiki so that my students and their families can continue to enjoy them for many years to come.
With your help, you will make it possible for learning to reach outside of our classroom and out into the world. My students will become lifelong learners who WANT to learn more!
