Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

With the short amount of time we have with our students it is hard to find time to meet all students needs and have a balanced literacy program, but with your donation, we can come one step closer. I teach at a low income charter school in California. My first graders are working very hard to learn to read and they are at a point in their education where reading is exciting and they cannot wait to be able to do it. Because we are a charter school and also because of the current economic conditions, supplies, books, and materials to enrich their reading experiences are insufficient. The supplies I have in my classroom are simply either things that have been donated or things I have purchased myself.

"Reading aloud with children is known to be the single most important activity for building the knowledge and skills they will eventually require for learning to read." — Marilyn Jager Adams We currently have a listening center in our classroom where kids can listen to stories being read aloud to them while I work in small groups to target specific student's reading needs. My kids get sooooo excited to listen to stories, yet we are in the first month of school and the small selection of stories has already been listened to various times. I would like to encourage this excitement for listening to stories being read aloud by providing more rich literature for them to listen to. Listening to stories on tape/CD has proved to effectively help students learn to read, improve reading fluency, and motivate students love for reading.

With the following new literature: The True Story of the Three Little Pigs, Stone Soup, Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible Day, and A Chair for my Mother, students will be able to continue reading for pleasure while learning essential reading skills. The CDs will provide a wonderful model of proper reading and at the same time allow the teacher time to work on specific reading deficits with students who need a little extra small group instruction to facilitate learning to read while the other students are also listening to rich literature.

By providing these literature experiences you will make it possible for first graders to open a door to endless opportunities by helping to teach them how to read. Imagine what the world would be like without being able to read... together, we can make sure that all students have a solid literacy foundation in order to become productive citizens of our society.
