Our school is a Title I school which means that 71% of our students are on free or reduced lunch. We have a testing population scoring below the state average in math proficiency. I teach fifth grade math to 56 students during three 80-minute blocks. We are working on adding more technology to our school to help our students be competitive in our technological world. We want to be able to teach math using every technology and medium available to our students.

Our students are scoring below the state average in math proficiency, so we really need to bring technology and innovation to our math class. The kids just learned how to create a Power Point slide about themselves, and they were thrilled to see how fun and easy it was to make an autobiography on a computer. The slide show had only images that they found on the Internet, but I can only imagine how thrilling it would be for them to use their own images. Making math eBooks and Power Point slide shows using their own pictures and ideas to explain a math problem or to demonstrate how to solve a math task would hook them into learning in a very creative way. Their eBook could also be used to tutor another student who may still be having trouble understanding a concept or a math strategy. Along with their eBooks, they can also incorporate their images and videos into a Power Point presentation to serve as a math portfolio that can be used by me to see if they have mastered a concept.

A digital camera with video, memory card, and tripod would capture still images and videos of the students demonstrating the math they have learned. They could publish eBooks on a free website that could be accessed by their classmates to help them learn, too. The eBooks could be accessed by their parents to show their child at work using newly learned skills. The eBooks could even be used across grade levels or by other schools. This innovative way to have the students apply their learning would help motivate them and make math a lot of fun.

With your help, we can raise our student's scores, inspire them to learn more, encourage them to continue working hard at math, and become math authors in their own right. The excitement that they will have in publishing their eBooks and creating their Power Points will bring math to life for them. They will definitely feel empowered when they use technology like the big kids do.
