For a child with Autism, knowing what will happen each day is the key to having a great day. I teach Special Education to children Preschool through 5th grade. My students have learning disorders from Down Syndrome to Autism. Our school strives to help all students learn regardless of their abilities.

Our classroom needs a Digital Camera to help with making Visual Schedules, writing Social Stories, learning classmates names and making memories. The school has a few digital cameras that can be checked out from the library, the problem is they require a specific disk and a computer that will read that disk to get the pictures. The cameras are not always available and it may be days before they are returned. Sometimes we have lost a learning moment that can not be regained when the camera becomes available.

There are many ways we will use this camera; we can take pictures of our daily activities and projects, field trips and any memory we want to save forever. Each day we try to put up a new daily schedule so all students, regardless of their ability to speak, hear or read will know what to expect for the day. So many times there are activities that come up in the day that are difficult to explain such as fire or tornado drills, assemblies and guest speakers. With pictures the children could make a mental note of what the teachers are talking to them about. Another way that we would use a digital camera would be to make books for our Social Stories. Social Stories tell about situations that may happen in real life such as "Going to the Bus" and "How I wash my Hands". Social Stories have to be read several times throughout the day and the students love to see themselves in books. When a child sees themself in the picture doing the task, it is easier for them to remember what to do the next time the situation arrives. One more way we would use the camera would be to capture memories of each child that we can send home such as experiencing new textures, baking cookies or taste testing.

With a donation to my project you will make it possible for my students to take their day home. Each day I would be able to email pictures to their parents. Many of my students are nonverbal, with the ability to take pictures, the students can "tell" about their day by showing a picture.
