Listen Up Second Graders!

My students need a listening center to use during workshop so they can listen to fluent reading on a daily basis. My school has already provided a CD player, a connector, and 4 sets of headphones but I need the books and CDs/Cassettes for students to listen to. Arthur, Toad and Frog, and dinosaurs are a few of our favorite characters/subjects to read about. I also selected books that are within the Lexile range of my students ability. Greetings, I am a second grade teacher in a charter school in northern Illinois. I previously taught first grade and then looped with my students and am now teaching them second grade. My school is a high poverty school (94% free or reduced lunch) that uses an extended day, extended school year, and literacy centers to increase student achievement.

In our classroom we have the equipment needed for a listening center; CD player, headphones and a quiet comfortable space to listen, but no audio books to listen to! That is why we need your help to bring our listening center to life.

Each day students need to do many things to advance their reading skills, one of those is to listen to fluent reading. While some of my students receive this at home, I know they can never hear enough fluent reading. That is why I want to bring a listening center into the classroom so that students can use it during workshop time to hear fluent reading and then practice applying their comprehension skills to the text they heard. This center would also be extremely valuable for the special education students in my class who do not yet have the ability to read. During D.E.A.R (Drop Everything And Read) time these students would be able to listen to audio books and engage more easily in the activity.

Getting this listening center up has been a slow and steady race. It took some time and much persistence to secure the hardware for the listening center, but now that it is accomplished I have one final step to take to make the listening center usable. Please donate so that our classroom can purchase audio books and bring the listening center in our classroom to life. Please donate to our second grade classrooms so students can work on building their fluency and comprehension skills!
