I had always hoped to harness third graders' energy- now I have found a way to do it! An energy bike will collect the energy generated by students' exercise and store it in a battery. I teach 3rd grade in a K-8 school in New York. It is a school of choice open to children who are zoned to district 3 serving students from diverse backgrounds, cultures and physical abilities. My school is an empowerment school as well as a mentor for the DOE collaborative community.

Students at my school have been obsessed with conserving energy. An energy bike is a way for them to not only learn about alternative energy, but also to experience the thrill of generating their own energy! Last year we tried to build our own energy bike, but it did not work. This year we hope to build a bike that the whole school can use and enjoy.

We decided to build a bike that is connected to a generator. When the kids pedal hard, the mechanical energy is converted to electrical energy. In that way, my students will be able to visualize a bulb lighting according to how much energy they generate and how different types of bulbs need different amounts of energy. They will also learn that energy is a valuable resource since the bulb will only fully light while the student is pedaling hard. That is why I need an energy bike, to give my students the opportunity to research, find facts, and make connections.

With your help my students will not only learn about energy but will also understand why conservation is vital and why we need to take care of our resources and our environment. Moreover, you can make it possible for the students at our school to have an energy bike!
