Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Due to DRASTIC budget cuts our school has lost funding for after school programs, field trips, and school supplies such as notebooks, construction paper, rulers, calculators, writing utensils, etc. Our school has ZERO money for teaching materials such as paper, chalk, dry erase markers, copy paper, and more. *Please continue reading more about our school, we could use your support!*
My school is located within a large urban area that has a diverse ethnic population. The majority of our students live at or below the poverty level and as a result we are unable to use traditional methods of fundraising.
For the first time in over 10 years, we have a 6th grade self-contained class in our building. As a result, the overwhelming MAJORITY of the textbooks and workbooks we have in our classroom are just not suitable for my students. Not only are we lacking basic supplies we are lacking NECESSARY teaching materials.
Our limited resources have not gone unnoticed.
The following are direct quotes from the children:
“Miss, can you get a smartboard in here! We had one last year at my old school and it was so much fun. You could do everything with that thing”
“I heard after school extra help was canceled, is that true?”
“How come we do NOT have art supplies? In 5th grade, we had so many?”
“I wish we had dry erase boards for review games”
“How many field trips are we taking this year?”
“How come the classroom library is so small?”
“Are we going to use TIME MAGAZINE in social studies?
Each time I responded with, “Let’s focus on what we HAVE this year.”
