Hands On Social Studies!

Our students need hands on activites for social studies. We need 30 individual U.S. and world maps, large classroom maps, mapping skills activities and overhead manipulatives.

I teach in a very high poverty school where resources are scarce. We are a 100% Free Lunch school. The students who would benefit from this proposal have all been retained at least two times and are very below grade level. They are currently in a fourth grade classroom and hope to make enough progress to get to sixth grade by the end of the school year.

My students struggle academically with social studies, particularly mapping skills. Paper and pencil tasks do not resonate with them in a substantial way. There are few opportunities for students to use manipulatives in conjunction with the skills they are learning because the resources have been unavailable to them. With individual maps at their disposal, conquering the state standards would be much easier. Having the ability to put the skills they have learned to use in a hands-on way will be an unparalleled addition to their education.

My students get very excited about their education, particularly when they can touch it. Putting materials in their hands that will enhance their understanding as well as spur their interest will only benefit them. Having hands on maps and activities that teach them while giving them new educational experiences is priceless.

Many people have given up on our students. We are giving them a second chance to be successful, thriving students. By donating, you will be making it possible for our students to achieve their highest potential. You will be helping to ensure our students are knowledgeable about social studies and mapping skills in the best way possible for them.
