"I want to inspire students to not be afraid to step up and take control of their futures! I teach grades 7-12 Family and Consumer Sciences. We cover topics ranging from Money Management, Parenting and Child Development to Nutrition and Job Skills. We are from an area that has a very high poverty rate so the skills they learn could be very vital to their futures. I teach them skills to help them survive on their own, whether they are starting a family of their own or going to college and living on their own for the first time. Many students do not complete college due to financial hardships. I try to teach them ways to manage their limited resources so they may complete their education.

We are a life skills classroom that needs some life! My students want hands-on, real life activities. With such a large age range I have to accommodate each class with a variety of projects. I often have the same students throughout the years therefore I try to plan different activities for each class I teach. This can become very costly and is the reason I am seeking assistance with the basic items to start many of our projects. I would be able to provide the other needed items, such as food and supplies, if these basics were in place. Many of my students come from high poverty homes and therefore are unable to afford supplies.

I am requesting foods lab equipment: cookware, measuring tools and food preparation supplies. My students will learn a variety of life skills while applying core academic skills such as mathematical and scientific principals. They will learn to plan nutritious meals, budget their money to purchase food and prepare the food in a safe and sanitary way. They will gain valuable skills during these projects that they can use on the job such as teamwork and time management.

You can make it possible for my students to learn valuable life skills by participating in real life experiences! Not only will it help my students this year but for many years to come!

My students need food lab tools to help them complete hands-on activities.

Dear Dan, Wokjai, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and Anonymous Donor,
Thank you so much for your generous donation to our classroom. These supplies will give many students the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in planning and preparing meals on a budget. It is very important in these tough economic times to be able to provide nutritious foods while stretching income dollars. Emphasis on learning these skills is important because a lack of them impacts everyone. Poor nutrition can lead to lost productivity in the workplace as well as increased healthcare costs. Lack of proper nutrition has also been shown to affect a child's ability to learn. These supplies will be used many times to prepare teens for life on their own. Thank you again for caring about the health and well-being of our youth and our futures!

With gratitude,
Ms. F.
