Reaching Out to Capture More Students

My yearbook students need a good digital Single Lens Reflex camera to take quality senior pictures for low-income seniors at our school.

Giving low-income seniors the opportunity to have a high quality senior picture isn't possible with our yearbook staff's current cameras.

Cameras and computers are essential when building a yearbook, but these things cost money, and the yearbook class does not receive funding. Usually, yearbook classes earn money by selling books, but they need to be able to sell books to over 50% of the school in order for this to be semi-profitable. Last year, we only could sell books to 43% of the school. Living in a moderately low income area, it is very difficult for students to find the money to purchase a yearbook, so my students resorted to doing bake sales, moving a local book store (that was rough!), making smoothies, and selling what ads they could to the already tapped-out community.

Last year, my Editor-in-Chief was determined to get every senior in the yearbook, but we discovered that 5% of the seniors couldn't afford senior pictures. She ended up using her own camera and/or borrowing a better camera to make it possible for those students to get senior pictures, and she took them herself. This year, my Editor-in-Chief's mom purchased a new Single Lens Reflex camera for herself. She plans on using this to take senior pictures for those who cannot afford to get professional photographs but still want to be a part of their senior yearbook. We need a good-quality SLR camera for the yearbook staff so that the class doesn't have to rely on using other people's expensive cameras in order to do something we need (and should) do for seniors at our school.

Your contribution will ensure that all seniors at my school receive a quality senior photo for themselves and their senior yearbook.
