My school is a small urban high school in North Carolina with fewer than 250 students. The school has a medical focus so that the students take extra electives in the fields of health, medicine and science, and also participate in internships with local medical offices and hospitals.
Like all students in our state my students are required to pass this class, Civics and Economics, and pass a state test at the end of the course in order to graduate. For a number of the students the course is very challenging and because we are a small school we don't have all of the resources that larger schools have to provide the students additional ways to learn the material that they need to master. The resources that we have are also geared more toward the field of medicine and not as much toward the humanities.
What I would like to do is to use a graphic novel about the US Constitution as a means to hook students and to get them more enthusiastic about the subject. The United States Constitution: A Graphic Adaptation takes a modern approach to understanding a document that's 222 years old but makes it come alive by this modern mode of storytelling. I believe the students will be willing to think more deeply and critically about how the Constitution is not just the blueprint for our government but an active document that changes over time to fit the needs of American citizens. I want to use these books in the classroom to give my students a more visual and stimulating approach to understanding how their government works.
By contributing to the cost of these novels you will be able to make the Constitution come alive for these students and help make Civics and Economics a more stimulating and interesting subject, and not just another graduation requirement. It's my hope that my students will be changed by this experience and will be even more motivated to do their best in the course and on the test at the end of the course. Thanks so much for considering our request!
