I teach Integrated Science at an alternative high school for at-risk students. Every student at our school has a story: foster care, learning disabilities (often undiagnosed), harassment at their home school, inability to read, full-time jobs, kids of their own, medical issues, chemical dependency, and brushes with the law. This school is their safety-net. We try to take them where they are (often multiple grade levels behind) and get them caught up, so that they can be successful in life beyond high school.

So how can you help? Give my students more frequent access to computers. We are using this incredible curriculum with couples inquiry investigations with big culminating projects. Students take what they learned in the investigations and synthesize it in a PowerPoint presentation, video voiceover, student-made animation, website, newspaper, or other project. As students craft their culminating projects, they not only learn the science, but also pick up skills in different computer applications. I want to do more of this because it's challenging and keeps students engaged. They want to do more because it's fun. The only thing that stops us is a lack of computers. We are lucky to get access one day per term.

We need 4 HP laptop computers, one for each lab group. This will allow lab groups to hop on their computer whenever they learn something new and add it into their current project. When we're working on the voiceover, for example, they could review their sports video after each lab looking for the concept they just investigated: F=ma, friction, momentum, action/ reaction, etc... If a particular topic is still clear as mud after the investigation, I can send groups to virtual labs, videos, and other websites to help them figure it out.

Giving my students these laptops will allow them to spend more time on these challenging and engaging projects. I know that will help them to get the science content that they need. More importantly, you will help them to build confidence and competence in interacting with technology that will help them to succeed in college and beyond. With your help, these students can go from slipping between the cracks to soaring.
