My Students

My students can't access everyday technology that typically developing children use with ease. They do not have the understanding to use a computer mouse to access CDs; they do not have the finger dexterity to press and hold the button on a blender, or the PLAY button on our classroom CD player.

I work in a preschool classroom for children with autism spectrum disorders.

My classroom is located on an isolated site with 5 classes that only serve children with special needs. Because we are a preschool site, we do not receive Title 1 or ADA funding because those programs do not assist preschools. However, because we are a special education site, we do not receive the funding that other preschool programs receive such as HeadStart. This means that any "extras" we need in the classroom are not likely to be purchased by the school district and in the end the teachers donate their own money to purchase these materials. My students are adorable and friendly. They LOVE to be at school and soak up everything that they can. They just need a little help doing the activities that other typically developing preschoolers do with ease.

My Project

The wireless, touch-activated switch that I am requesting will help my students participate in our every day activities without being aware of their disabilities. This wireless switch will allow my students to access our new classroom computer with ease. All they have to do is tap the switch to make the page turn on an interactive story book or tap the switch to turn on the music to our CD player. This simple switch can even be used to turn on the microwave or blender during our weekly cooking activities and provide my students with more opportunities to fully participate in these activities.
