Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach at a year round school in an area where students are coming to school daily with difficult life situations to overcome. The students I am teaching have to overcome things like poverty, single family homes, violence, drugs, and an array of situations.

Just think--how many pens have you sat and clicked at a meeting, or how many sheets of paper have you wasted doodling while listening? Our students need the chance to do the same thing in a non-distracting way! My students are challenged with a need for kinesthetic learning. They have a need to touch and move all the time. There are times when I am just not able to teach my students through a kinesthetic means. For those times I would like my students to use fidgets. My students just want to move! We have been using cheap homemade fidgets in my classroom this year. It has made a huge difference for the students that use them. The problem with the fidgets I currently have is that they are not reliable or cost effective. They break or wear down easy and I am out looking to replace them again. By funding this project I can purchase sturdy and quality materials that will last for years.

I need fidgets for my classroom. Wiggly seats or cushions allow those students who frequently fall out of their chair (for leaning, or standing on their knees, etc.) to move their lower body. Stress Balls and hand fidgets allow the students to move their hands and listen at the same time. As mentioned earlier, the fidgets are an alternative to pen clicking and doodling that we do as adults. I believe that fidgets are increasing comprehension and focus within my classroom. Many of my students are rolling swimming logs under their feet, wrapping pipe cleaners around their fingers, squeezing rice filled balloons, and wiggling on deflated kick balls all during my lessons. They are looking at me, listening to me, and interacting in my lessons. I believe that I am fulfilling their need to move and gaining the focus that I need to teach them. It's a win-win situation for myself and my students. I only need a way to continue the successes that we are currently having without having to replace the fidgets monthly and I believe you can help!!
