Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My classroom likes to rock and roll, but we do not have the rocks to roll with. We are a high-need community, but I like to think of our students as stuck between a rock and a hard place. Our student population is small, so our funds are limited to our needs of our students. In order to reach the top of our mountain of achievement, we need to start with the pebbles. Teaching science to my fifth grade students allows me to bring the other parts of our world to the classroom.

The farmlands in the delta of Arkansas show my students soil erosion and weathering. What my students do not yet see is how rocks and minerals play an important part to our farmlands and waterways.

My students need rock and mineral materials for differentiated instruction within the classroom. The materials will allow my students to not only learn about earth science, but it will cross over to physical science at the same time. The materials will demonstrate how light interacts with minerals and their colors (physical science standard PS.7.5.1 and Earth science standard ESS.8.5.4)and will also help the students to understand properties of minerals (Earth science standard ESS.8.5.4), types of rocks (Earth science standard ESS.8.5.7, ESS.8.5.8, ESS.8.5.9) and the rock cycle (Earth science standard ESS.8.5.13). When more state standards are covered within one or two lessons, you can go into greater detail for a better understanding for the student's misconceptions.

Your help will make it possible to show students different ways to uncover the past, to explore the highest mountains, and to look to the future of our needs. Thank you.
