"If we can't go to the river, let's make the river come to us.
I teach aquatic science to 11th and 12th graders. This is the first year aquatic science has been offered for high school students in our district. I have no supplementary material to get my aquatic science program off the ground.
Our science budget has been severely cut, so field trips are almost out of the question. There are also no rivers or streams within walking distance of the school.
Because of this, one of the big projects my class was going to do was creating a river tank, but, over the summer, someone stole our huge, never been taken out of the box, aquarium out of my classroom. My students were devastated.
Currently, my students collect samples from the drainage ditch in front of our school, and because of this we have lots of random beakers with fish in them, waiting for their permanent home. Luckily, a sweet biology teacher gave us her 30 gallon aquarium, so all we need now is the river tank mold, animal set, and plant set to get our tank running. Once we have the river tank completed, our fish will be placed in their permanent residence.
Part of the purpose of this project is teaching my students how to be responsible, and how to care for other living organisms.
My class is full of many individuals who have never been to a river, let alone considered what is INSIDE one. Of the 1200 species listed as threatened or endangered, 50% depend on rivers and streams.
With your help, my students will be able to understand the importance of rivers and streams in our environment. From this learning experience, I hope that they will come away from this with the knowledge that rivers are a vital part of many ecosystems.
Many of my students do not belong to any organization or participate in any extra-curricular activities. As silly as this may seem, these students finally feel like they belong and are part of an "elite" group called "the aquatic science class". Your donations will give my students the opportunity for a team building activity and provide them with a permanent educational resource.
My students need a 30 gallon river tank mold, a river tank animal set, and a river tank plant set to complete our classroom river.

Dec 29, 2009
Dear Heather, Tim (Twimbo), kc from Planted Tank, John, Hoppy, paul, Janice and Janet Kennedy,
The best Christmas gift I have ever received was a notification email on December 23, 2009, that my donation request for a classroom river tank, animal and plant set had been completely funded! I never dreamed that so many caring people would be interested in my classroom dream project. The students in my Aquatic Science class will be elated to hear this news when they return to school after the holidays. This has been a special year since it is the first time an Aquatic Science class has been offered at our school. It is special to me because I have never taught this class before, and I am learning right along with my students.
All summer I dreamed of the wonderful things we would do this year in this fourth year science class, but when school started, I learned that no funds were available for the projects I had in mind. I had been researching the concept of a river tank for quite some time. It is so much more than an aquarium. I wanted my students to thoroughly understand the importance of rivers in our ecosystem.
The enthusiasm of the students in my Aquatics Science class has been extremely rewarding to me. We now have a class pet, Sebastian, a crayfish that we "rescued" from the drainage ditch in front of our school, which has been the closest thing to a river we have had. Sebastian has become the center of attention in my classroom. One exciting episode occurred when Sebastian molted during class. You would never believe that high school juniors and seniors could find such an event so fascinating. Unfortunately, he has a really bad habit of eating our guppies we also rescued from the drainage ditch. Because of this, we are going to put him in a separate tank when we get all of our supplies for the river tank. To get more students involved in this project my husband, who also teaches at my school, is going to get his Engineering Principles class to build a tank to put the river tank mold in.
Our Aquatic Science class has already prompted the formation of a school wide Aquatic science club. I am hoping that the addition of the river tank with its animal and plant sets will stimulate even more interest in my Aquatics Class. I cannot thank the many generous donors enough for making my dream come true. I would like to give a special thanks to PlantedTank.Net for their overwhelming generosity. Without you guys, my project would not have been funded.
I can promise you that our river tank system will be put to good use immediately. With gratitude, Mrs. T.

"I donated to this project because some of us at the internet forum, http://www.plantedtank.net/forums decided to do this, both to help a school and to encourage more young people to enjoy planted aquariums."

"Thank you so much! You have no idea how much you have made my day! I never realized how much students enjoy having "class pets." Many times I'll have students that finish their work early so they can watch the fish that we caught in the drainage ditch in front of our school. I know that a river tank would be an excellent addition to my classroom. Thanks again for your support!"
