The Great Book Bind: We're in a Bind... We Need Books!

My multicultural students need a Multicultural Stories Paperback Library, a Listening Center, a Cassette Player, a storage case and an I Can Read! Complete Series.

You may not be able to feed my students' hunger for food, but you can feed their hunger to read on grade level! My students need food at night, and I may not be able to always help them with that, but I am always striving to give my second graders a top-rate education. Only three of my 22 students are reading on grade level. The school is struggling in many ways, and as a first year teacher I am trying to serve as a model for other teachers in my building who seem to have given up on our school and the community that surrounds it.

My students show up to school with empty bellies everyday. Many live with grandparents or great-grandparents due to their families' inabilities to care for them. I honestly know that most of my students are safer with me in my classroom eating a donated granola bar than they are at home with their own families. They still come to school happy to see me and as ready and willing as possible to do their jobs everyday. Reading is the most important thing they need to be able to do. Without knowing how to read, they can not understand our math curriculum, our science curriculum or social studies. The saying is true "Reading Comes First!"

The solution to our biggest problem is easy. We need more books! I have donated as many books as I have been able to, but I still need more. My students who are English Language Learners (half of my class) need to hear English constantly and the ability to read along as they hear the language. The more books I have and the ability to have a listening center can help this a lot more than one might think.

Any help you might want to give will feed the need for my students to read! Your generosity will never go unnoticed or unappreciated.
