The famous Dr. Seuss once said, “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go." My 1st grade students in rural Louisiana have a limited perspective of the world. They know little about life outside of our small town and books offer the perfect avenue to explore the world around them. I teach nineteen amazing 1st grade students who are just beginning to experience the joys of reading. Our school serves students from an area of high poverty and my administrator doesn't have additional funds to finance classroom needs outside of basic supplies.

While conferencing with my students early in the school year, I learned that the majority of my 1st graders don't read outside of school. It is vitally important that books become a part of their day to day lives, and they have positive first interactions with reading. My students need a library in our room where they can go and lose themselves in a good book.

We need two comfy bean bag chairs and a soft carpet where my students can curl up with books from our classroom library. We also need additional books to supplement our small classroom library. My 1st graders will use this library corner every day. By providing them a comfortable space to learn and grow, you will help further inspire their love of reading.

My students are born into a world of limited opportunities, but this doesn't have to be the case. You can help bring the world to my 1st graders in rural Louisiana. By providing them with a safe space to explore good literature, you will help open their minds to the adventures that await them within the cover of a good book. Reading will help foster my students' love of learning and will help shape our leaders of the future. Thank you so much for your partnership and support!
