This year I teach a challenging group of First Grade boys at a school in rural Virginia. We are a high-need community with a large percentage of our students receiving free or reduced lunch.

The majority of my students come to first grade with very little exposure to the printed word. Parents either can't or don't know how to provide a print rich environment. I try to make up for this by creating a classroom filled with print. Over the years I have assembled a classroom library of hundreds of books that include fiction and nonfiction. I have downloaded over a hundred audio books to Fisher Price FP3 players. I have discovered and used websites that read stories to students. I have even found, illustrated, and printed poetry charts.

This year I would like to add something interactive to the classroom: TAG readers and books. I purchased one TAG reader to try it out and it's a hit! Now I need more to meet the high demand.

Last year our school failed to meet AYP (annual yearly progress) because our African-American boys did not meet the reading standard. I believe that being able to achieve high test scores starts by getting our boys to love reading in 1st grade. Your donation will help me provide another tool that will hook my boys onto reading.
