Empowering Students to Change the World

My students need to learn about Greg Mortenson's inspirational story as told in Three Cups of Tea in order to broaden their horizons and teach them that they can be the change they want to see in the world.

My students need hope. More than anything else I can provide for them in the classroom, they need hope: hope that things will get better, hope for the future, hope that they can affect positive change in the world around them. As my students prepare for college, the best gift I can give them is hope, and Greg Mortenson's story is full of hope. As students read his tale about attempting to climb K2, they will learn about the commitment it takes to reach for the summit. As they read about his failures, they will learn to take their own disappointments in stride. As they experience the regions of Afghanistan and Pakistan with him, they will see more of the world, learn about Islam and tolerance, learn the merit of diplomacy, and the lesson that you can attract more bees with honey than with vinegar. Mortenson's book Three Cups of Tea will work to teach my students how to be in the world. It will show them how one small stone can make large and far-reaching ripples in the pond. This lesson about how one dedicated individual can change lives, change the world, is one of the most powerful lessons I can hope to teach my students as they prepare to leave our small community in Maine and head off to college. As they embark into the "real world," my students need to have hope that it will all be worth it, that they can do something positive with their lives. This book will help show them how.
