Non-Western Literature-Walking in the Footsteps of Others

My students need 20 copies of "My Forbidden Face: Growing up under the Taliban", 5 copies each of "19 Varieties of Gazelle: Poems of the Middle East" and "Three Cups of Tea: One Man's Journey to Change the World... One Child at a Time", and 4 copies of "Three Cups of Tea: One Man's Mission to Promote Peace... One School at a Time".

In Harper Lee's classic American novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, Atticus Finch tells his children: "You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view - until you climb into his skin and walk around in it." These famous lines ring just as true today as the day they were written.

As our world continues to change and to simultaneously become more interconnected, it is crucial that our children truly learn about the people and cultures on the other side of the world. Books, and in particular memoirs and poetry, provide a unique path into unfamiliar cultures. The books in this project not only introduce students to other people, places and circumstances, but they also encourage empathy and a global understanding. For instance, our students know that there is a war in Afghanistan. Do they know anything else? Do they know about the Taliban? Do they know what women have had to endure? Do they know about the beauty of the landscape and the culture? How would it affect our children if they did know these things? Would they try to change the world? Would they have a little more empathy for others? I think we should find out.

I would like to put copies of various non-western books including Latifa's "My Forbidden Face" into the hands of my students so that they can start to understand some of the conditions that exist in the world around them. My Forbidden Face is a memoir told from the point of view of a sixteen-year-old Afghani girl whose life is abruptly and completely changed by the Taliban. 19 Varieties of Gazelle is a book of Middle Eastern poetry that illuminates the beauty and tradition of several ancient cultures. Finally, Three Cups of Tea is the story of "Dr. Greg" Mortenson, a man who single-handedly showed the world how to make a difference by building schools in Pakistan and Afghanistan. Mortenson's book also brings awareness to the cultural and political differences that keep people apart. *As a bonus, Mortenson's book and Latifa's book are both non-fiction, a genre that is often neglected in public schools.

Please help us to better understand the world around us by supporting this project. These books are our opportunity to walk in the shoes of others.
