Let's Paint Like Faith Ringgold

My students need to see that African Americans are artist and how to be creative by watching how-to-create painting DVDs, using paint/supplies, and having a means to protect art work by using drying racks.

I teach in an inner city school where the majority of the students receive free or reduced lunch, which means that our school is title one and "at-risk". I teach Kindergarten in a class of 26 students. My students come eager and excited to learn everyday.

My students are artist in their own right. The have the ability to creative at the drop of a dime. Many of them love to express themselves through art. However, they need to see that African Americans have made a substantial contributions to art and art history. Research has shown that art supports not only children's intellectual and educational development but also their personal and social development. Therefore, I would like my students to experience how art can be used to teach and to understand that art is cultural.

The resources that I would like to use to teach my students about art is DVDs by the African American artist Faith Ringgold. I would also like to have a proper environment that will protect the work that they create from this series from Ringgold. I plan to teach my students about how Ringgold used her art to create children's books that we have read in our class. I also want my students to experience the tradition of quilt making and how it is connected to their culture. This project will serve as a lesson in history and art.

By giving to this project, my students will have the opportunity to use their artistic ability to learn about painting techniques, history, and their culture. This project will make the saying, "Imagination is more important than knowledge" by Albert Einstein come true. Our children are filled with imagination and with this project it will make possible that my students put their imagination to come to live through art.
