Our school is overcoming barriers in order to succeed. I am the science lab instructor for grades 2, 3, 4, and 5 in an elementary school in South Carolina. We are a public education facility located in a low to middle income, rural area. The lab teaches 460 students from both regular education and special needs classes.

How can we study animals without having access to animals? Our science standards indicate that we are to study about animal groups, adaptations, habitats, food chains/webs, and biomes. However, we do not have access to the specific animals being discussed. Having animals in the lab will ensure that the students not only have access to the topics being discussed, they will also serve as caretakers of the animals in their specific habitats. The animals' diet will ensure that the students learn about chains/webs associated with the predator/prey relationships. Animals in the classroom are a great way to motivate students to take note of the world around them and to take care of our animals within that world.

We will need animals in order to study them. I have placed hamsters, koi, a gecko, crickets, and tree frogs on the wish list. We will also need aquariums and screens in order to ensure the animals' safety. The food for the animals is also included on the list. This project will greatly enhance the curriculum and will ensure that the students gain an understanding of the animal world around them. Taking care of another living thing will also help these children value life outside of themselves. Student achievement in science is necessary. Our students' interest level in science has improved over the course of the past 5 years. However, having animals in the lab add to the interest and the achievement of our young scientists.

Your help will ensure that our students have access to animals they may not have outside of the classroom. Many of our students do not have animals at home. Having animals in the classroom ensures that our students are not lagging behind children of the same age in high socio-economic areas of our county. Thank you, in advance, for helping to ensure that our children are given every opportunity to learn about how to take care of animals, animal habitats, adaptations, and predator/prey relationships of the world around them.
