I am a high school English Language Development teacher for immigrant students learning English in southern California. My students are low-intermediate level English Language Learners, and are mixed 9th-12th grade. They come from many different countries, such as China, Vietnam, Mexico, El Salvador, Burma, Cambodia, and Honduras.

My school is a high-need school, and does not have many technological resources. My classroom has one computer, so it is impossible to expect the students to use the computer during class time. We have one computer lab that is used by the computer programming classes, so my students literally have no access to computers in school. Most of my students cannot afford to have their own computer at home either. When I think back to my high school days and how much I used a computer in school and at home, this makes me really sad. So much of what is relevant today has to do with computers and technology. How can we expect our students to be ready for the 21st century, when they don't have access to computers to learn basic computer skills?

Therefore, I am requesting two laptop computers and two mice to get the ball rolling on a classroom laptop lab. The students will use the computers to do word processing of essays, internet research, make PowerPoint presentations, and many other activities. I already received a wireless internet access point through another generous donation, so my classroom is internet-ready! Now all we need are some computers to get online and get learning.

A teacher couldn't ask for better students, and they deserve the best. Your generous donation will help start a collection of classroom laptops that will not only teach basic computer skills, but will help get them ready for college and beyond. Thank you very much!
