Oprah's Book Club will have nothing on us! I teach 6th-8th grade Spanish at a high-poverty level charter school in Maryland. There is a great mix of abilities and intelligences at my school. My school is very unique.
Our principal tells us to "Dream Big". By doing so, we will always have a goal to work towards and feel we are consistently making strides toward success. Unfortunately, most of my students' families do not have the resources or finances to afford the supplies. They love to read but since we don't have a true library, asking them to buy the books is absurd.
Like racers, we are going to start our slow jog; my Spanish class will have an in-class book club. Our first book will be "Esperanza Rising". To reduce costs, I will use a class set. Each student will be given a journal to use at home and during our in-class book club sessions. This book is very relevant to their lives; themes include dealing with family relationships, personal loss and transitions. They will have the chance to read and reflect and make TONS of text to self, community and world connections. I can't wait!
Our children are the future. We want to prepare them well. Your help in making this book club a reality will help their critical thinking skills, enable them to participate in small-group discussions and maybe even spark an interest that will fuel their college and career choice! What a great project to be a part of! Be a part of something FANTASTICO! Help my class.
