Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Technology drives today's economy. Although many students go home to TVs, video games, and the Internet, other students have little interaction with technology. Our best hope to create the leaders of tomorrow is to teach them how to use technology today. I teach first grade in a poor area of a large city in Texas. To truly thrive, my students should learn how technology can enhance their everyday lives. Not only will this help them as they progress, but it will also assist them in preparing for the technology test in middle school--an area in which my district can use some improvement.

My school does what it can, but there are simply not enough resources for all students to learn in the best way possible. Most of my students do not have computers at home, and I have only a few old computers in my classroom (for 18 students!). A Smart Board can fill that gap. Using a Smart Board, I can teach an entire class lesson using technology, thereby engaging all of the students at once. There are various programs and lessons specifically for the Smart Board that tie-in directly to my lesson plans. That way, the students learn the main subject (such as math or reading) through an interactive technological medium. My school has two Smart Boards and over 30 classrooms. Last year I was allowed to use the Smart Board in my classroom for a short period of time, and the results were immeasurable. As a young teacher, if I am lucky enough to have the support to purchase my own Smart Board, I will be able to touch hundreds of students for years to come.

The Smart Board is a unique tool that I can incorporate into my daily lessons. It is similar to a projector, but with many interactive features. Through the Smart Board, students can write, manipulate graphs, master comprehension skills through interactive questioning, and gain confidence in their ability to present to the rest of the class. Students will become more comfortable both with the main subject and the underlying technology. The best part is that students view the Smart Board as fun! I personally witnessed the difference in comprehension of the subject matter during the few times I was able to borrow the school's Smart Board last year. The Smart Board is useful for both full-class lessons and small group projects. In small groups, students conduct their own lesson on the Smart Board, providing them with the opportunity to use technology, peer teach, and practice sharing. Technology has made the world run faster. My students should gain the tools to thrive in this global economy. Starting these types of interactive lessons at an early age is the key to future success!

Many people take our interactive, technological world for granted. But many students, especially at poorer schools, do not have the opportunity to experience how technology changes the way we think and work. Your support will ensure that my students gain the necessary tools, at an early age, to live in a technological society.
