Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Creating conscientious students today fosters responsible citizens of tomorrow. My science class deals with students of low income population with daily needs for the most basic of items. Many students come with the background of recycling in their previous schools. Recycling paper brings funds to the school that we can use to purchase basic school supply needs for our students. Recycling lends itself to real life lessons that may be used in science, social studies, and math classes. Students may create diagrams and graphs to demonstrate the quantities of paper collected and the monies received.

Our needy families lack funds for weekly purchase of paper, notebooks, pencils, erasers, and art supplies. A full paper recycle bin brings extra monies to the school. Neighborhood recycle programs offer monies for accumulation of paper in the recycle bins. Building the habit of recycling at school, which brings its own rewards-needed school supplies, would encourage recycling at home. Students want to form a Green Squad that collects trash daily at recycle stations around the campus.

Green Stations designated at key points around the campus will serve as depositories of used paper goods. Teachers will deposit used paper supplies at the Green Station closest to their classroom. The Green Squad will daily take the trash cans to the recycle bins on campus. We need at least 12 trash cans to cater to the needs of our 2-story building housing 130 teachers and 1,200 students. The Green Squad will alternate a different group of students each month that take responsibility for this project. Monthly records will be kept to see how much money is brought into the school. The Green Squad will maintain a large graph near the Main Office of the school to show the accumulation of pounds of paper and monies allotted to the school from this collection. Students will develop a sense of responsibility in the cleanliness of their campus. The Green Squad will also photograph their recycling activities and post these photos around campus. These picture posters will encourage other students to help keep the campus clean.

With your assistance, our students will gain the financial support to purchase the daily needs of a successful student. This simple purchase will develop an ethic of environmental responsibility and self-esteem as the students accept the task of recycling used paper. The Green Squad will take on the appearance of the school as their responsibility and they will discourage others from spoiling this good image.
